Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.

Aviation Problems

The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.

Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.

International Illegal Trade

Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."

So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.

Smuggling Techniques

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."

European Tensions

These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.

Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
