The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
