An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did for a living, and I explained that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or self-belief to reach out at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia led me to a position in Switzerland where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
